Desperate Search For Missing Submersible Gains Renewed Hope After ‘Banging Sounds’ Heard

Published

on

A deep sea submersible named Titan, carrying wealthy travel adventurers en route to the wreckage of the Titanic in the northern Atlantic, went missing Sunday after losing communication with its surface vessel, less than 2 hours into its dive. The initial dive to the wreckage site, according to others who have taken part in the same tour, takes about 2 hours, but it is unknown at this point if the submersible reached the depths of the Titanic wreckage before losing contact with the surface.

A reporter who was the first to report from the Titanic, Michael Guillen, spoke to Piers Morgan Monday about his harrowing experience on an identical tour, in which the submersible he was reporting from was lodged against one of the gigantic propellers of the very wreck they were there to explore and witness. In that incident, they were able to remain in contact with the surface vessel, and were free of the impediment within an hour.

Sadly, the submersible that has been missing now for days is nearly out of oxygen, and rescue efforts have been ongoing since the incident was reported. There has been some indication that the travel company responsible for the tours, Ocean Gate, did not report the missing vessel for 8 hours, and regardless of the outcome of this intense multi-national search, there will be many questions needing answering.

The price for a ticket on the exclusive tour to the Titanic is $250,000 per person, and the journey to the wreckage is based out of Newfoundland.. The missing submersible has 5 occupants and they are: Stockton Rush, OceanGate CEO; Hamish Harding, billionaire entrepreneur and adventurer; Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, father and son, Pakistani wealthy elites; Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a world-class diver who led the first recovery expedition to the Titanic in 1987.

There is renewed hope that the extreme adventurers may still be alive, after a Canadian vessel first picked up ‘banging sounds’ Tuesday, initiating the deployment of additional sonar equipment in the area, which also picked up the noises, coming at 30 minute intervals.

Time is of the essence in this desperate search for the missing group, as the 96-hour supply of oxygen onboard is consumed, but is a massive coordinated effort from multiple nations to try to reach an optimal outcome and bring the Titan safely to the surface.

This is a developing story.
