Louisiana Senate Passes Ban On Transgender Treatments For Minors

Just the News: The Louisiana Senate on Monday approved a ban on certain gender-related treatments for minors after a Republican-led committee rejected it in May.

Under the legislation, the state would prohibit doctors and healthcare providers from performing a host of treatments on those under the age of 18. Violators would lose their professional licenses, according to The Hill.

The upper chamber approved the plan in a 29-10 vote, sending it back to the state House, where it is expected to pass.

It now heads to Gov. John Bel Edwards' desk.

Republican State Sen. Fred Mills, who blocked the bill in committee two weeks ago, was the only R to vote no.

“This isn’t complicated. Kids should not have access to permanent medical procedures in order to affirm an identity they might outgrow,” said state Republican Sen. Jeremy Stine.

Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards has voiced opposition to such a plan and it remains unclear whether Republicans will secure enough support to override a possible veto.
